What does NFP measure?

The report counts how many jobs were added or lost in the US economy during the previous month — excluding farm workers, private household employees and non-profit organisation staff. It covers roughly 80% of the US workforce and is considered the most comprehensive snapshot of labour market health available.

The NFP number is published alongside the unemployment rate, average hourly earnings and average weekly hours — all of which traders analyse together to gauge the direction of Federal Reserve monetary policy.

Why does NFP matter for forex?

The Federal Reserve sets interest rates based largely on inflation and employment. A stronger-than-expected NFP print signals a healthy economy, raising expectations for rate hikes or slower rate cuts — which strengthens the US Dollar. A weak print does the opposite. Because interest rate expectations drive currency valuations, NFP is effectively a direct lever on USD pairs.

The most volatile pairs during NFP releases are:

  • EUR/USD — the world's most traded pair
  • GBP/USD — typically large pip moves
  • USD/JPY — sensitive to risk sentiment shifts
  • USD/CHF — safe-haven flows amplify moves
  • AUD/USD — risk-on/risk-off proxy
  • Gold (XAU/USD) — reacts inversely to USD strength

When is NFP released?

NFP is published on the first Friday of each month at 13:30 UTC (8:30 AM Eastern Time) by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The release is accompanied by the unemployment rate and average hourly earnings data.

In the minutes before and after the release, spreads widen, liquidity drops and price can move 50–150 pips in seconds. Preparation — knowing the release is coming — is the single most important edge you can have.

Frequently asked questions

What does a higher NFP number mean for USD?

A higher-than-expected NFP suggests strong job growth, which typically strengthens the US Dollar. It signals economic health and raises expectations that the Federal Reserve may keep rates higher for longer or raise them further.

What happens if NFP is lower than expected?

A weaker-than-expected print usually weakens the USD. It raises concerns about the economy slowing down and increases expectations that the Fed may cut interest rates sooner or more aggressively.

How far in advance should I prepare for NFP?

Most traders mark the date a week ahead, review forecasts the day before, and set specific alerts for 15–30 minutes before the release. That window lets you review your open positions, adjust stop-losses and decide whether to be in or out of the market during the release.
